Tariffs and the Effects on Our Taxes

Posted on April 9, 2026 in taxes

Tariffs are taxes added onto the price of goods that we buy. They are different from income taxes which charge tax on your earnings. Here in Nevada, we do not have a state income tax. We do, however, pay sales taxes in many different forms. Visitors to Nevada often comment on the high price of a gallon of gas in our state. Every gallon of gas sold in

Nevada includes federal fuel tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, Nevada state fuel tax of 23.81 cents per gallon and then depending on which county you are in, up to an additional 70 cents per gallon. If you are purchasing a gallon of gas in Clark County, $1.11 is going towards the payment of fuel taxes. What does the state use the fuel tax revenue for? Similar to the federal fuel tax revenue which funds interstate highway projects, the state fuel tax revenue is used to fund infrastructure and road projects throughout Nevada. A portion of the regular sales tax on other goods purchased in Clark County also goes to the Nevada State Highway Fund. So when visitors to Nevada comment that our roads are always under construction, we know where the money comes from to fund that work.
